Today I long to wear only green
Accentuating bright, olive eyes
To don backless shirts
Revealing glorious sharp shoulders
Turn my head at a right angle
Showing the long line of my neck
To drink & be merry
Gifting the world a boisterous laugh
I desire deep conversation
Bringing questions many fear to ask
God teaches me here
I am fearfully & wonderfully made
God is not blessed
By self depreciation
I am His cherished creation.
When I think of all the things
You did to raise this child
The sacrifices & late nights
How your love could stretch for miles
I know it now more than ever
As I raise babies that are mine
The pain that you must feel
How daily you must resign
To knowing all that’s left
Is a stone that weathers and fades
All you can do for your boy now
Is put flowers on his grave.
What if dared to dream
These big dreams racing through my brain
I let down my walls
My barrier to entry
To feel the joy that would be
Those dreams realized
The risk-reward is skewed
A see-saw of what I’m doing right
Or wrong.
When is my safety keeping me safe
Or keeping me stuck?
The higher I climb
The harder the crash
It takes my breath away.
A cocktail of excitement and fear
Living is intoxicating.
Sometimes it aches so intensely
I feel I will die
And it isn’t scary
Because the longing in my belly
To touch you
Kiss your cheeks
Lace your fingers through mine
The dread of a repeated realization
That you are truly gone forever
Is too much to bear
Almost
For I am still here
Holding this burden of grief
Of times long past
When our days intertwined
And the warmth of our bodies
Created a gift
That will never be returned.
